One of the gem cities of Northern Europe, Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. The city of Tallinn, a major Baltic port, a rail and highway junction, an industrial center, and the largest city of Estonia, is located on the Gulf of Finland, opposite Helsinki, on Estonia's north coast to the Baltic Sea.

Tallinn is divided into eight administrative districts naming Haabersti, Kesklinn, Kristiine, Lasnamäe, Mustamäe, Nõmme, Pirita, and Põhja-Tallinn.

Tallinn has made marvelous development in the information technology sector in recent years. On 13 December, 2005, the New York Times dubbed Estonia as “a sort of Silicon Valley on the Baltic Sea”. Skype is one of the several IT startups under Tallinn’s belt.

Tallinn is the city blessed with exquisite natural beauty. The city Lake Ülemiste, Lake Harku and The river valley provide exquisite clad of natural beauty to adorn the city. The city is a wonderful tourist destination in the Baltic region.

The hill of Toompea is at the historical heart of the city. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall, and around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.

Tallinn receives volumes of tourists, especially daytrippers from Helsinki, its sister city across the Baltic Sea. The city is home to several clubs, pubs, bars, and restaurants, and is known for its vibrant nightlife.

The city is vivid expression of Estonian art, architecture and culture. The two old towns, Lower Town and Toompea, are main attractions of the city. The town is home to several fine architectures, museums, art galleries etc. The Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Lutheran Cathedral are the major attractions of Toompea. The main attractions of Lower town include Raekoja Plats (Town Hall square), the town walls and towers {notably “Fat Margaret” and “Kiek in de Kök”} and St Olaf church tower.

Kadriorg, 2 kilometres east of the center, is home to the former palace of Peter the Great, which has been converted to the Estonian Museum of Art, and gardens and woodland. The buses and trams run to the place. Pirita, 2 kilometres north-east of Kadriorg, offers numerous opportunities of boating at Pirita river. The district is also home to the Botanic Gardens.

Climate—

Tallinn experiences a fairly cold winter, a cool spring with little precipitation, a moderately warm summer and a long and rainy autumn. However, sometimes the summer temperature rises to around +30° C.

Traveling To Tallinn—

Tallinn Airport (TLL) has marvelously developed as an airport hub of the Baltics. Tallinn Airport, about 4 kilometers from Raekoja Plats (Town Hall square), is served by Estonian Air, which provides good quality services to the city from a series of European cities, including London, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Riga, Vilnius, Kiev and Moscow. There is also a regular helicopter service between Helsinki and Tallinn. The buses and taxis run from airport to the city center.

Sea is another option to enter Tallinn. The two main ferry terminals are at the eastern end of Sadama tänav about 1km (.6mi) northeast of the Old Town. The city is served by several Ferry lines including Eckerö Line, Linda Line, Nordic Jet Line, SeaWind Line, Silja Line, Tallink, and Viking Line.

The city also has train service. The Central train station is just outside the northwest edge of the Old Town. Tallinn-Minsk train passes through Riga and Vilnius twice weekly. The city has limited train services to/from Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. The City also does has bus-route connections with Riga in Latvia and Vilnius in Lithuania.
