Mauritius

The island of “Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and heaven was copied after Mauritius,” writes Mark Twain in Following the Equator.

Mauritius, officially known as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the southwest Indian Ocean, about 900 kilometers (560 mi) east of Madagascar and about 3,943 kilometers (2,450 mi) southwest of India. Mauritius, the part of the Mascarene Islands, the republic also includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands.

Mauritius is divided into nine districts which all are important destinations for the travelers. These districts include Black River, Flacq, Grand Port, Moka, Pamplemousses, Plaines Wilhems, Port Louis, Rivière du Rempart and Savanne. The other territories of the country include Agalega Islands, Cargados Carajos Shoals (Saint Brandon), Rodrigues, and Victor Harbor.

Port Louis is the capital and the larges city of Mauritius. The other important towns of Mauritius include Curepipe, Vacoas, Phoenix, Quatre Bornes, Rose-Hill and Beau-Bassin. English (official), Creole, French (official), Hindi, Urdu, Hakka, Bhojpuri are the languages spoken in Mauritius.

The island is famous for its exceptional natural beauty. The country has from time to time been chosen as setting for numerous films. Mauritius is known for its extinct dodo bird.

Climate—

Mauritius enjoys warm, dry winter from May to November, and hot, wet, humid summer from November to May. The country experiences tropical cyclones from November to April.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at Port Louis is the major gateway for travelers visiting Mauritius. The airport receives the international flights from the major destinations of Africa, Australia, Europe and Asia.

The airport is served by Air Mauritius- the home carrier, Air Austral, Air Madgascar, Air Seychelles, Air Europe, Air France, Air Zimbabwe, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Condor, South African Airways, and Emirates.

The tourists can enjoy a helicopter ride around the island with Air Mauritius, which can be booked at their main office at the Paille en Coeur building in the centre of Port Louis near the Museum. The boats are good options to travel around Mauritius.
